Composting, anyone?

We have over 60 families who’ve signed up so far. BUT! With about 600 households here we should aim for at least 100!!

ROCK CREEK HILLS COMPOSTS!
RCHCA is excited to partner with Compost Crew, a locally owned green-business based in Rockville, to make food scrap recycling and composting easier.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?  When we remove organic waste (food scraps) from landfills, the process of composting creates nutrient-rich soil and oxygen. Additionally, this process significantly reduces methane and other greenhouse gas emissions from landfills. When food-waste is otherwise trapped in landfills, it decomposes anaerobically and creates methane and other dangerous gasses. We’d like to reduce this problem.

HOW IT WORKS?  Compost Crew gives each participating household an airtight bin and a clean compostable bag each week. Each household just needs to fill the bin with organic waste, and leave it at the curb on Friday mornings. (Many families choose to purchase a smaller bin for the kitchen, and dump that into the larger bin.) The Compost Crew brings the waste to an impressive and nationally praised composting facility in Prince George’s County, MD.  As an additional benefit, each household can request a bag of nutrient rich compost-soil twice per year.

WHAT CAN BE COMPOSTED?  As a rule: anything that grows or is made from the Earth can go in the bin. This includes meat, dairy, vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds and filters, tea and tea bags, egg shells, breads and other grains, napkins, paper towels, pizza boxes, dryer lint, etc. A comprehensive list is located here: The List.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?  RCHCA has access to an amazing 50% discount from the Compost Crew. The cost is just $16 per month ($4 per week) for weekly pick-up services. One day we hope that Montgomery County will offer this service for free with trash and recycling pick-up (especially as the county pays less for shrinking landfills!). Until that time, we can pay this reasonable monthly fee.
