Silver Creek Extreme Cleanup! Saturday April 18

The Silver Creek and adjoining Kensington Parkway Park are significant landmarks in the Rock Creek Hills neighborhood. Many of us escape to the creek area to reconnect with nature and experience the quiet beauty of Rock Creek Park, walk our dogs, ride a bike or take a run. We are proud to tell you that the Rock Creek Hills Citizens Association has officially adopted Silver Creek through the Rock Creek Conservancy Stream Team program, to take a more active role in monitoring and protecting this section of Rock Creek Watershed.

To kickoff this stewardship, we invite you to join us in a Silver Creek cleanup event on Saturday, April 18, from 9:00am-1:00pm, as part of the 7th Annual Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup. This will be one of more than 100 cleanups taking place in April throughout four states and the District of Columbia, hosted by the the Alice Ferguson Foundation Potomac River Watershed Cleanup, the National Park Service and Montgomery County Parks. Our goal is the total cleanup of Silver Creek and surrounding area where trash originates.

During the Silver Creek cleanup we will also participate in the Audubon Naturalist Society Creek Critters program, a mobile phone app used to conduct macro-invertebrate surveys and assess the health and quality of the creek waters. More information and instructions will be sent to participants who register.

Children and groups are welcome to participate, including girl scout or boy scout troops and other local organizations. Students can earn SSL credits, so please bring needed forms. If you are interested in helping with the coordination of the cleanup, please contact me, Laura Dennis, at [email protected].
